Nicolas DENDONCKER

Dr. Nicolas Dendoncker

The main focus of my present research at the academy Louvain (University
of Namur) is related to the study of Ecosystem Services. We develop
participatory agent based models (ABM) of land use and
environmental change in the context of several Belgian and European
projects with case studies in Belgium, The Philippines, Congo and
Senegal.
These models are combined with the development of scenarios
to explore the response of individuals and society to different drivers
of future environmental change. Participatory approaches are
implemented and stakeholders are involved from the beginning to the end
of the project. The impacts of these landscape changes on Ecosystem
Services are assessed and sustainable development pathways are
proposed. In several projects, ecosystem services are explicitly valued
and quantified.

My research at the Centre for the Study of Environmental Change and
Sustainability (CECS), University of Edinburgh, focused on modelling
land use change and its impacts on the environment (e.g. on soil organic
carbon sequestration, biodiversity and other ecosystem services) in the
context of a number of EU and national research projects (ALARM,
FRAGILE, MULTIMODE, SWECIA...). I have used a variety of
spatial-statistical techniques as well as rule-based environmental
models. I have also developed, in collaboration with other researchers,
a model to downscale land use data and scenarios. In general, I am
interested in uncertainty and scale issues, for example, uncertainties
in model outputs that arise from scaling or using poor quality datasets.

Teaching:

At Edinburgh University, I have developed, coordinated and tought
courses related to geoinformatics and environmental modelling, within
the MsC in GIS programme. Here at UCLouvain - Namur, I am in charge of
several courses related to cartography and GIS, landscape analysis and
planning
, as well as epistemology and history of geography.

Colloque : Ecole doctorale SIG Participatif (Namur, 2010)

Participatory research has recently been used in numerous studies in geography. Participatory research aims at involving all stakeholders and raise awareness on the spatial implications of decisions, with the objective to reach consensus. Participatory research has been used in renewable resources management and land planning. However, despite great hopes put in the method, a number of biases have been identified. Among them, inequalities in access to participation, or a lack of neutrality in contexts where large disparities in power are found. Such biases question the usefulness of the approach. Is participatory research the latest fashion, or can they really bring significant change to geography? Our keynote speakers will attempt to answer this question, bringing their experience in participatory modeling in GIS in a diversity of contexts (Senegal, Philippines, Thailand, France). Françoise Orban, Pierre Stassart and Nicolas Dendoncker will also share their experience. The seminar will consist in seminars, group discussions and practical activities simulating field participatory research.
