Philippe LAURENT

Chercheur Senior

Philippe Laurent graduated from the Universities of Namur (Candidature) and Louvain-La-Neuve (Licence). In 2002, he was awarded the "European Master of Law in Intellectual Property and Technologies" (LLM) degree from the Universities of Leicester and Liège, and received the "Voortgezette Academische Opleiding in Intellectuele Rechten" degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Brussel the following year.

Philippe works in the Intellectual Property Department of the CRID since 2003. His first assignment consisted of drafting general information on Intellectual Property rights and assisting European companies, entities and citizens through a legal helpline in the framework of the IPR-Helpdesk, a project financed by the European Commission. At the same time, Philippe started participating in the Creative Commons Belgium project.

In 2004, Philippe contributed in the writing of the first book providing a global legal analysis of open source licensing under Belgian law, which was published the next year. At the same period, he became part of the experts' team that assists the European Commission on the legal aspects of the EUPL licence. He co-authored several studies on that matter.

Philippe received in 2005 a one year internal funding (from the Fond Spécial de Recherche of the University of Namur) in order to study the Copyright related issues pertaining to E-Learning practices. He then worked for two years as a teaching assistant in IP Law and Property Law (firstly working simultaneously on the IRMA project) starting as from September 2006.

In September 2008, he joined the new CELLaVI Initiative, a project financed by the Walloon region in order to develop a FLOSS (Free Libre Open Source Software) expertise centre.

His work on a PhD thesis about Intellectual Property licensing is ongoing.

Besides his research activities, Philippe Laurent is member of the Brussels Bar since 2003. He is Attorney at Law in the law firm Marx Van Ranst Vermeersch & Partners, where he advises businesses on Intellectual Property, Information Technologies and Commercial Law matters.

Philippe is also appointed by the CEPANI as Third-Party Decider for ".be" domain name disputes, and is alternate member of the Belgian Intellectual Property council.

On the 11th of August 2006, Philippe was awarded the Bullukian Foundation's Prize for Best Presentation in the frame of the young researchers' forum of the 16th World Congress on Medical law, which took place in Toulouse (France).
