This area has been developing in the last forty years starting from work in formal languages, programming, mathematical logic, and control theory. Nowadays, the theory proceeds along a certain number of avenues such as net theory, process calculi, and modal logics. Many specialised or enriched models have been developed in order to cover a variety of applications such as synchronous, real time, and distributed systems.
