The study of linguistic landscapes, which is commonly understood as the interpretation of "the use of language in its written form in the public sphere" (Gorter, 2006:2), has attracted considerable interest among researchers over the past five years. LL research raises interesting questions as to who puts up what sign(s) where, in what language(s) and last but not least why (or why not)? Therefore, its heuristic potential to "point out patterns representing different ways in which people, groups, associations, institutions and government agencies cope with the game of symbols within a complex reality" (Ben-Rafael et al, 2006:27), is undoubtedly one of its main reasons of success. In our view, LL research aims to look at ways in which the linguistic landscape does (or does not) reflect language use and attitudes, and how (i.e. to what extent and in what ways) it is manipulated in order to confirm or resist existing (or presumed) language prestige patterns and hierarchies. Taken in this sense, LL research clearly feeds into the study of minority language communities, especially since issues of power and resistance are at the heart of its research agenda. We also argue that the systematic analysis of written language in the public sphere should be correlated with other data sources such as oral language practices or language legislation, in order to be fully effective as a research tool.

LL research constitutes a challenging and fresh approach to minority language issues, for it approaches the 'same old issues' of language contact and language conflict from a very specific angle, thus providing new and useful insights into "patterns of language [...] use, official language policies, prevalent language attitudes, [and] power relations between different linguistic groups" (Backhaus 2007:11). Our aim is to illustrate this by presenting original LL work throughout a variety of minority settings in Europe.

In contrast to attitudes towards bilingualism and bilinguals (Baker, 1992), the attitudes of bilinguals raised with two languages at home have received comparatively little attention so far. In this presentation we will attempt to redress this imbalance by examining aspects of the attitudinal and motivational disposition of Dutch-French bilinguals in Brussels and comparing them to those of L1 and L2 speakers of Dutch and French who did not grow up bilingually. The aim is to identify similarities and differences between the attitudinal and motivational patterns of bilingual versus monolingual L1 and L2 speakers.

The data come from a larger study of the language attitudes, learning motivations and levels of French and Dutch L1 and L2 proficiency of 686 secondary school pupils (age 12, 15, 18) in Belgium (Mettewie, 2004): 149 pupils from French medium schools in monolingual Wallonia, 91 from Dutch medium schools in monolingual Flanders, and 446 pupils from Dutch medium schools in the bilingual capital of Brussels. These Dutch medium schools in Brussels are attended by children from monolingual Dutch, monolingual French as well as from bilingual Dutch-French families, creating a complex immersion-like language learning situation.

The attitudes and motivations of these pupils were measured by means of 125-item questionnaire. In the presentation we will discuss analyses of the data which show that the bilingual pupils in the Dutch medium schools in Brussels have a distinct attitudinal and motivational profile which shows both points of convergence and divergence with the patterns of L1 speakers and L2 speakers of Dutch and French. We will conclude by discussing factors which may contribute to the specificity and complexity of bilinguals' attitudes and motivation towards both their L1s in a bilingual city like Brussels.

Patterns of L2 proficiency in monolingual vs. bilingual L2 learning contexts in Belgium.

This paper reports on a study investigating the development of proficiency in French L2 and Dutch L2 by Dutch-speaking and French-speaking pupils in Belgium within the framework of Gardner's (1985) socio-educational model of second language acquisition. In the study, the relationship between attitudinal factors, contextual factors and L2 development are examined.

Participants were some 200 Dutch-speaking and 200 French-speaking secondary school pupils (ages 12, 15 and 18). Half of the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking pupils learned their respective L2s in a monolingual educational environment (foreign language classes in Flanders and Wallonia), the other half in the bilingual context of Brussels where in addition to formal L2 instruction also naturalistic exposure to the L2s is provided.

The following three instruments were administered to all participants: (a) a language background profile, (b) an attitude and motivation questionnaire, (c) a battery of L2 proficiency tests measuring the four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking), metalinguistic knowledge as well as discrete components of productive L2 proficiency (grammatical complexity, lexical richness, grammatical and lexical accuracy).

In this paper we will present and compare the results obtained by the various groups on the L2 proficiency tests and interpret them in terms of their attitudinal and motivational profiles and contextual backgrounds (e.g. available L2 input and output conditions).
