Cosmology

The cosmology aims to describe the universe, using cosmological models, mathematical descriptions of the whole or of a part of the history of a universe, possibly different from ours; these descriptions are based on a physical theory, generally the general relativity, but also oon ther relativistic gravitation theories.

Numerical optimization

Improving the performance of a system as much as possible while keeping the decision variables within certain prescribed limits is a very widely used methodology both in industry and research.

The projects associated with this theme ambition, directly or indirectly, to supply conceptual and software tools for this purpose.

More specifically, the projects deal with numerical methods for continuous optimization problems, including the design of algorithms, the mathematical analysis of their efficiency in the context of suitable convergence theories, the production of high quality software, in order to make the concepts and algorithms as widely available as possible, the effective computer testing and the environments that make this testing relevant and transferable, the consulting capacity needed to adapt concepts and software to specific pratical applications.

This scientific domain, called mathematical programming, is very active worldwide, and a number of significant progress are made within teams that are muti-disciplinary (mathematics, computer

sciences, sciences and engineering, ...) and international.

Transportation systems and mobility

That people and goods mobility is a major analysis topic has become obvious. The media continue to relate the daily difficulties

(congestion, disappointing performance of some public transportation systems, logistic issues), the many projects (public transport reforms, fiscal incentives, conditions of road transport) and the opinion of the population expressed by opinion groups. Moreover, the social value given to mobility is such that one can forecast an

exacerbation of todays problems. The management of this sector has therefore become (and will continue to be for the foreseeable future) a major and daily preoccupation for the public sector, industry and the population itself.

The theme covers the methodological developments assocaited with this braod context, including

  • the analysis of the behaviours that cause the demand for goods and people's mobility,
  • the spatial and temporal structure of the mobility patterns,
  • the organisation and improvement (performance, security, durability) of the transport system,
  • the foreseeable evolution of this highly complex and interdependent system, and the strategies that have to potential to influence it.

The methodological tools used in this framework range from dedicated surveys to quantitative models, and use techniques associated with activity pattern analysis, discrete choice modelling and computer simulation.
